Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2011 has been good to all of you and that you are looking forward to plenty of good reading in 2012. I returned from Hawaii, which was a fantastic trip (photos to be posted later) and rushed forward into the Christmas holidays and getting back to work. I've been absent from my blog (obviously) but have had the chance to begin catching up on my Google Reader so some of you have no doubt been noticing that I have been commenting again.
I didn't do a lot of reading in Hawaii because we were outside swimming, kayaking, golfing, and hiking. This trip seemed to be more about activity and not as much about relaxing downtime. I managed to finish only one book which was The Post American World by Fareed Zakaria. I know this seems like a heavy read for a Hawaiian vacation but what can I say? I get into moods where the only thing that satisfies me is a good non-fiction read. If you wonder about the future of America as world power or which countries are emerging as economic leaders, this is the book for you. I found it fascinating since I was aware that China and India are both countries that are emerging and growing like crazy but I was completely ignorant about countries like Brazil and their economic role. Anyway, I realize this sort of book isn't for everyone but I really loved it.
I've neglected to write my review of We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver and now feel like too much time has passed for me to get my head around everything I wanted to say about the book after I finished it. I'll just say that the book absolutely floored me and made me think about the whole nature vs. nurture thing and how children grow up to be monsters. What role do parents play in forming an evil human being who becomes a mass murderer? Are people born bad or are they raised to be bad? I really loved that Ms. Shriver set the book up as a letter that the mother of Kevin was writing to her husband to explain what she felt her role was in Kevin's outcome and all of the mistakes that she and Kevin's father might have made. Of course things are never this simple and the book does a brilliant job of taking the reader down a path and then switching things up at the end. I know the movie is out right now and I do want to see it but might need some time to get into the right mindset. I can't imagine how powerful the film might be, after reading the novel.
For 2012 I am planning to post more and read more. I guess I say that every year but I do feel like if I don't post more there is no point to my keeping this blog and I'd really like to keep the dialogue about books going!

OMG I had forgotten about your trip to Hawaii! That place is nothing but pure heaven, and am so jealous that you were just there! I was the same way...there was no room for reading when I visited.
ReplyDeleteWe Need To Talk About Kevin is a very unique book. I loved it and I hated it. It horrified me...the whole thing...but I just couldn't stop reading. Like driving by a very bad accident on the highway. I want to see the movie too, but I don't think it is showing here yet. I'm scared to see it, but I know it is going to be good. In a bad way.
I really want to read We Need to Talk About Kevin - ideally before the movie comes out, but who knows if that'll happen.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you - I hope 2012 is good to you!
Happy New Year to you Kathleen. I very much enjoyed the Shriver book even if very harrowing. I recently saw the film also which was similarly unsettling and well worth seeing.
ReplyDeleteI very much look forward to reading your posts again in 2012: keep it up!
I've never been to Hawaii but someday I hope to go.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Kevin is definitely a book that stays with you.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Welcome back, Kathleen! I can't wait to see your pictures, and of course you shouldn't be reading, you should be out and about! I mean, it's Hawaii, for cryin' out loud! Happy New Year to you and can't wait for 2012! By the way, if you haven't yet, you MUST read 11/22/63, Stephen King's new boook. Ah-May-Zing.
ReplyDeleteHey, there - if you get a chance, email me at coffeeandabookchick at gmail dot com. I want to run something past ya! (I couldn't find your email but I thought I had it somewhere in my contacts!) :)
ReplyDeleteI really need to give We Need to Talk About Kevin another chance. Started it on audio and didn't like the reader much, so I set it aside. Maybe print would be better. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteHappy new year, Kathleen! Glad you ended the year with such an enjoyable trip :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun trip! And I'd like to read both the Zakaria and Shriver books--they both sound good. If I let too much time pass I also can't write about a book very properly--I've done that a little too much this past year. Have a great New Year's and Best Wishes for 2012!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Kathleen! I hope it's a wonderful one for you and your family. Hawaii sounds amazing, and I agree that We Need to Talk About Kevin is a harrowing yet fascinating read. Here's to many more captivating books in 2012!

ReplyDeleteYour Hawaii trip sounds wonderful! I think it can sometimes be difficult to read much on vacation. I also am totally a mood reader - my moods often dictate what I feel like reading whether I'm home, commutung somewhere on a trip etc. so I totally understand you reading The Post American World while in Hawaii.
I haven't read We Need to Talk about Kevin yet but hope too this year. Your comments are encouraging and make me want to read it soon. I'm glad you enjoyed it and have thought about it since reading it.
Best wishes for a great 2012!
